Vanilla Sugar

I recently read a recipe that required the use of vanilla sugar. Since I rarely encounter this term, I browsed thru the net to find out what it is. Apparently, vanilla sugar is when a vanilla bean has been added to white granulated sugar or confectioners (powdered or icing) sugar. The bean is cut in half and buried in the sugar, covered, and left for a week or two to allow the vanilla to permeate through the sugar. This vanilla sugar can be used in place of regular sugar and adds a wonderful vanilla flavor to desserts.

Want to make your own? Here's how:

  • To make vanilla sugar place a cut vanilla bean into 1-2 cups (200-400 grams) of granulated white sugar or confectioners sugar and store in a covered container for a few weeks before using.
  • One tablespoon of vanilla sugar has the flavoring power of 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
Do I sell this? No. I've decided to upload a post or two every month that provide small tips on how you can make your life sweeter by simple modifications you can make in your kitchen. I hope you'll find this tidbit useful. Happy New Year!

Hmmm... vesti, you could've phrased your question and statement so much better, but instead you decided to be rude. Kudos! You've successfully proved that you're an ass! Apparently, you haven't only had zero training in cooking, you've had zero training in manners as well.

This post was meant to be a minor tip, to help those who didn't know how to make/prepare vanilla sugar. If you know how to make it, then good for you.

But, in answer to the question. Vanilla bean pods can be purchased in Santi's and other specialty stores. Prices vary in different stores, but they don't come cheap. They usually come in plastic tubes.

Sorry if I was a bit harsh too. I admit that I am quite new at this. My apologies as well if I misunderstood what you meant to say. Thanks for visiting my site though. Hope to see you again in the future.

Making vanilla sugar is a great application for recycling of vanilla pods.
